New system of free admission to Museums and Monuments in Portugal

From the beginning of 2025, Portuguese citizens and residents can visit 37 museums, monuments and palaces belonging to the Ministry of Culture on the mainland, free of charge, 52 days a year, any day of the week. Until now, free visits were limited to Sundays and public holidays.

The decision by the Minister of Culture, Dalila Rodrigues, came into force on August 1, 2024, thus also allowing each person to visit more than one museum or monument on one of the 52 free days.
The process is simple: at the entrance to each museum or monument, each visitor must present their Citizen’s Card at one of the ticket offices – a first time for registration – and indicate their tax number.
When you enter a museum or monument again, you must go to the ticket office and present your Citizen’s Card so that the day within the 52 days of free access can be deducted.

Unfortunately, there are no museums or monuments in our city that are covered by this free regime. The closest to us are the Machado de Castro National Museum in Coimbra, the Conímbriga National Museum in Condeixa-a-Nova or the Soares dos Reis National Museum and Fernando de Castro House-Museum in Porto.

In any case, it’s a good way of promoting culture and allowing us Portuguese to travel more within our country!
