The exploration of salt in the region of Aveiro dates back to a time prior to the formation of the Ria de Aveiro itself, being the first written document about it prior to the foundation of nationality.
Over the centuries, the instability of the bar was a decisive factor in the variation in the number and production of the saltpans, which was translated by periods of decay, interspersed by periods very favorable to production, as happened in the 16th century in which Aveiro became one of the best ports in Portugal, with a great increase in the commercialization of salt and in cod fishing. There are also records showing that there were about 256 saltpans in the 1950s, which dropped to 9 in 2017.

The visit to the Aveiro Saltpans lasts approximately 45 minutes and is accompanied by a guide who will explain all the history, tradition and secrets behind the salt marinas. Through this visit, you can travel a little to the past of our city and understand the evolution of the harvest process. You will know the processes, methods and tools used, the fauna, flora and the person behind all the work, the “marnoto”.
The activity can be done in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French speaking guide.
